Personal Shopping: What you Snapped Up September

Monday, September 5, 2016 /

One of favourite things is to go shopping! Lucky I get to do it on a regular basis. Check out this week’s bag.

The Client

Colour palette: Cool & Clear

Body shape: Rectangle

Style personality: Classic/Natural

Size: 14 – 16

The Brief

Ms L wanted to update her work wardrobe and invest in a suit. She also wanted to pick up some separates to mix and match, plus dress down with jeans on the weekend. It was important that the fit was comfortable and that the pieces could be layered as the air-conditioning in the office could mean that it was quite chilly in summer.

The Shopping Bag

Here’s what we bought:

Mix & Match

Buying the right combination of colours and pieces means that you’ll be able to put together lots of different outfits with less. For example, we’ve used the Diana Ferrari Emma pant as our base and with the tops and jackets in this shopping bag you can create at least 9 outfits.

Ms L's Shopping Bag 1

Investing in a suit, especially one that also comes with a skirt (this one does, however it wasn’t quite right for Ms L), can double the number of outfits that you can create. Add a pair of jeans (like we have above) and you’ve also got your smart casual weekend sorted too.

SS16 Trend Update – Dresses & The Cold Shoulder

Wednesday, August 24, 2016 /

It’s that magical time of year! The blossoms are starting to reveal themselves and we all begin to worry about donning summer gear and showing more skin……do not despair! There’s something for everyone amongst the 2016 Spring/Summer trends. As a self-professed lover of winter and its fashion, even I’m excited about what this season’s trends have to offer.

You’ve probably noticed already but the dress, in every shape, pattern, print, length and style is here in a big way. If you’ve got good pins (aka. Legs) the mini will be your pic. If, like me, you prefer to detract attention away from this area, there are plenty of midi and maxi options too.

Showing off your shoulders is another biggy in 2016, with off-the-shoulder and the ‘cold shoulder’ look gracing the spring/summer lines of most retailers.

Check out our Polyvore sets below for ideas and inspiration. Click to get all the details.

Get amongst it people! Even better, book a spot in one of our Melbourne Ladies Weekend sessions, and we’ll help you find and incorporate pieces that are ‘on-trend’ but still suit your style personality.

A Weekend Away is Good For The Soul

Tuesday, August 23, 2016 /

pretty brunette and curly blonde having fun

It’s true! The verdict’s out! Research has proved a weekend away is so good for the soul. With your girlfriends it’s ‘bees-knees,’ ‘heart-sing’ material!

We’re lucky to get away once or twice a year with some of our closest girlfriends, including one-another, some local, others interstate. It gives us the opportunity to connect without the distractions of everyday life, and yes, we admit, indulge in a little food, wine and shopping). For those we don’t see on a regular basis, it’s like we’ve never been apart. Even though we may not have spoken for months (we keep up to date via text and social media), we pick up from where we left off. We’re truly grateful for these connections, particularly for the joy and sanity they bring.

It’s not just about catching up with friends. It’s also the opportunity to recharge from day to day life. That doesn’t mean that we need to lie down for a whole weekend. Although, let’s be honest, sometimes the idea of booking into a hotel and not talking to anyone for 48 hours is rather appealing – has anyone tried that? Just getting away, doing something different, having a looooooong, leisurely breakfast and being inspired by new and creative things, means we can come back rejuvenated and ready for the next installment (even though sometimes this feeling only lasts about 24 hours – but hey it’s a great 24 hours).

That’s our 2 cents worth. If you still need convincing you deserve a weekend away with your girlfriends, check out these clips and articles:

If you’re feeling the need to get away, you’re in luck! Style Liberation is hosting another Ladies Weekend in Melbourne Friday 21st October to Sunday 23rd October. We’ll be running 4 shopping sessions, each based on a different theme, plus hosting a cocktail event on the Saturday evening. If you can’t make the Style Liberation Ladies Weekend, can we ask you a favour? Can you check your calendar, send a text and lock in that well deserved break with your ‘bees-knees’ besties?

Long Legs or Short Legs?

Thursday, August 11, 2016 /

LongBodyShortLegs

ShortBodyLong Legs

Due to the art world’s penchant for creating images of the human body that are impossibly perfect and in proportion, the human eye likes……….no, actually, LOVES proportion. Case in point, Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian man, who is perfectly proportioned at eight of his own head lengths in height–four from head to hip join, and four from hip join to toe.

We’re here to reassure you though, that there are very few of us born with this perfect proportion.

Instead, the overwhelming majority (including me!) are usually seven to seven and half of their own head lengths in height and vary significantly when measured from head to hip and hip to toe.

Here’s a little ditty to illustrate. I vividly recall the night my girlfriend, Ms T, and I had our style consultation with the gorgeous Fiona. First up, as I sipped Champagne, she measured Ms T. All good. Then she measured me. Cue Fiona’s puzzled face. She measured my legs again…. and again. The puzzled face remained. She then measured Ms T’s legs twice more. More of the puzzled face. Why? Because she could not believe, despite my being approximately a head taller than our Ms T, that she found our legs to be exactly the same length!

So, if the human eye loves to see, and finds beauty in, proportion and balance, but most of us don’t have it, how do we create the illusion of it?

Here’s how! First you must know your body proportions. For example, my height is all in my body but mostly in my freakishly long neck (the longest Fiona has ever measured, in fact…….just call me giraffe lady). This makes me a long body/short legged person. Ms T is a long legged/short bodied person. Therefore, to create my (illusion of) proportion, I would follow the tips and tricks outlined in the Long body/Short legs image. Ms T, on the other hand, would create her (illusion of) proportion by following the tips and tricks outlined in the Short body/Long legs image.

Through an individual Style Analysis or one of our Style Liberation packages we can help you establish your vertical body proportions and provide you with more tips and tools to navigate them and many other types of body variations. So give us a call. We’d love to hear from you.

The Blouse vs The Shirt

Monday, July 4, 2016 /

The Blouse vs The Shirt

Love one of these blouses? Click to get the details.

For me, the blouse is the winner (I’m a huge fan).

The pros being it’s soft, drapes in all the right places (you know – right over those things called breasts), comfortable against the skin and gives you freedom to move. There’s none of that button popping gaping that can happen with a shirt. The other benefit is if you wash it on a delicate cycle and hang it straight away you don’t need to iron. Not many shirts can claim such a feat. Last but not least, it’s great for all style personalities.

The cons, well sometimes they can become static (highly recommend carrying a compact bottle of anti static spray).

Ok, so blouses can be tricky too, in particular for those with an hourglass body shape, as they may feel it hides their shape. Unless the blouse is semi-fitted, for hourglasses it’s best to tuck it in.

For everyone else here’s how to wear the blouse.

If you’re wearing the blouse with pants you can tuck it in or wear it out. However, if you’re wearing it out,  you should wear it with pants that are skinny to straight, otherwise the volume will drown you. The same goes for skirts, but generally if you wear a blouse with a skirt, it’s best to tuck it in.

Personal Shopping: What You Snapped Up

Monday, June 6, 2016 /

One of the highlights of my job is to take clients shopping. There are two reasons, firstly it puts into practice the theory that we’ve discussed during the Discover Your Style and Wardrobe Rescue. You’ll quickly learn what to look for and work out which pieces work for you (or not), and why. Secondly, it’s that look on your face when you find an absolute gem and the happy dance starts (accompanied by impromptu clapping from us).

You’ve told us that you’re really interested in what other people (just like you) are buying so we thought we’d share with you some of the items we purchase on shopping trips each month.

Last month’s shop was for a gorgeous lady who was looking to update her work wardrobe with smart casual pieces that mixed and matched to create as many outfits as possible. She already had skirts and dresses covered so we focussed on tops and trousers. This is what we found:

Top picks from our Ladies Weekend

Thursday, May 5, 2016 /

A huge thank you to the ladies that joined us last weekend for our first trip to Melbourne. There was 12 hours of shopping, cocktails, laughs and more than 20 stores. We shopped up a storm! Kristi and I had allocated a couple of cheeky hours after the event to do a spot of shopping for ourselves but instead opted for some bubbles at the airport.

Well, there’s loads of gorgeous pieces in store at the moment. So here’s our pick of the best from last weekend (purchased by our lovely ladies).

Our picks of Ladies Weekend Apr 16

Would you like to be part of our next Ladies Weekend? The next weekend is scheduled for the 3rd and 4th of September in Melbourne. We are capping numbers to 4 per session so if you’d like to register your interest and be the first to get all the details please click here.
